The details of instrumentation used on a spark ignition engine for measuring the relative exhaust emission characteristics of Methanol and Gasoline with carburetion and manifold fuel injection systems are described. The pollutants considered significant for study are the oxides of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, unburnt hydrocarbons and aldehydes. A large data base is generated operating the engine over a wide range of conditions. A statistical correlation between aldehyde emissions and exhaust gas temperature is presented.
