The use of alternative fuels in the absence of initial lack of fuel supply guarantees and in the scenario where an initial market penetration is desired calls for a strategy where the technology of fuel utilisation is not only simple but flexible as well. For use of fuel methanol in diesel engines an approach has been used where upto 20 % diesel is replaced by fumigation of methanol through a mechanical device which controls methanol introduction. Performance of the engine using a dual-fuel system is expected to be at least comparable to that of operation on diesel alone. Engine performance, including emissions and lubricant degradation was therefore determined with methanol fumigation. The results have indicated that a simple dual fuel metering device can be designed and easily retrofitted on automotive diesel vehicles. It was observed that for a targetted 15 to 20 percent diesel replacement, improvements in bsfc, generally lower emissions and comparable lubricant degradation and wear is obtained, thereby making the concept potentially useful,
