Modern vehicle design is increasingly compromised by the conflicting requirements of improved refinement and reduced weight and friction. This conflict has become especially apparent in powertrain design where the phenomenon of idle, or light load, transmission rattle has appeared as an unwelcome adjunct to new designs. Traditionally, 'tuning' of the clutch torsional stiffness has been adopted as a means of reducing, or eliminating, idle rattle. However, without an appropriate driveline system model, such 'tuning' can be time consuming and the results sub-optimal. Using such a model it should be possible to identify transmission problems before manufacture and, using parametric studies, design-out problems without recourse to expensive or inefficient palliative measures. This paper reviews the current state-of-the-art in transmission driveline modelling and describes the construction of a test rig to provide experimental data to assist in the development of an analytical driveline model written in modular form using the simulation language 'ACSL'. It is intended that the test rig data will verify modelling assumptions, such as bearing friction and shaft stiffness, and the model predictions of rattle/no-rattle transition zones of operation.
