Processes used for generating corrosion resistant coatings for Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm's (MBB) helicopter fleet are briefly reviewed. Emphasis is attached to process procedures resulting in high wear resistance. The manufacturing techniques discussed include plasma spray, detonation plating and physical vapour deposition (PVD). Plasma spray and detonation plating are standard MBB procedures, while the application of PVD is part of a current evaluation programme. Helicopter components with plasma spray or detonation plated coatings are discussed.
