If railway vehicles are travelling at high speeds, large vibration amplitudes of vehicle and track may occur. For design and supervision the investigation of the coupled system is essential. In this paper a Galerkin approach is presented as an appropriate method for obtainining analytical approximations of the vibrations of vehicle-track-systems. The track is modelled as a Timoshenko beam of infinite length, the vehicle as a linear oscillator with two degrees of freedom. In case of excitation by harmonic forces (e.g. unbalanced rotating masses) the displacements of the system are calculated, in case of excitation by stochastic forces (e.g. surface roughness of the track) a covariance analysis of the displacements is carried out.
