The current International Standard ISO 2631 on whole-body vibration suffers several limitations which result from the procedure proposed for evaluating the exposure and from the basic concepts on which it is based with regard to human response to vibration. A Draft Proposal of a revised standard has recently been voted on at the international level which attempts to remove some of the difficulties encountered in the present standard. However, it is the view of the standardization committee on human exposure to vibration and shock that technical difficulties are still present in the revised standard and that these will have to be overcomed before a Draft International Standard is published. This paper describes the major controversial aspects of ISO 2631 and presents the principal elements of the procedure proposed in the Draft Proposal for evaluating exposure to whole-body vibration. The two approaches are compared by using vibration signals recorded on off-road forestry vehicles. It is shown that the two approaches can lead to significantly different estimations of the effects of vibrational on comfort und particularly, on health.
