The effects of torsionally flexible wheelsets on the lateral stability (hunting) of rail vehicles is examined. The mathematical model is that of a single rail vehicle with four torsionally flexible wheelsets rolling on four roller stands, simulating the track. The effect of torsionally flexible wheelsets on the hunting stability of rail vehicles is investigated by solving the eigenvalue problem. Parametric results for a complete vehicle consisting of the carbody, two trucks and four torsionally flexible wheelsets are presented for comparison. The results indicate that the hunting speed of rail vehicles is increased significantly by the use of torsionally flexible wheelsets. The results of this study also indicate typical trends for guiding suspension design studies.
