With emphasis in the design-to-product cycle of automotive components shifting from a development based approach toa 'right first time' philosophy, it is timely to review and appraise the methods and techniques which help to facilitate such a change. A primer equirement of such a methodology is the ability of the designer to assess the durability and reliabiity performance of his designs. This paper will review the current fatigue design practive pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches. The detailed requirements for assessment, life improvement and prevention of fatigue failures will be discussed. The role of 'expert systems' software to provide the above expertise and its associated design-support tools will be outlined.
