In April of this year MIRA carried out a crash test of a Porsche 944S. The vehicle was made for the USA market and fitted with airbag restraint systems on both driver and passenger sides. The unusual feature of this test was that it as not done for Porsche but was carried out for a group of companies. Most manufacturers concentrate on developing the crashworthiness of their own models and do not have the resources to evaluate the performance of competitors' vehicles. However, in collaborating with other manufacturers with a common interest, these resources have been made available at MIRA in a group-sponsored crash test. The first vehicle, chosen was the Porsche 944S because, at the time, it was the only Euorpean vehicle equipped with driver and passenger airbags for the American market. This paper discusses the specification for the test and the project organisation.
