Legislative requirements in the USA, require vehicle manufacturers to comply with certain maximum injury criteria for front seat occupants when a vehicle is subjected to a 30 mile/h barrier test. In addition, there is a rquirement that these criteria can be met with a restraint system that operates in a 'passive' mode - such that an occupant is not required to take any acive part in its deployment. Current systems that are used to comply with this requirement are broadly of three types: Air bag systems, two point motorised passvie seat belts, and two or three point non-motorised passive seat belts. Electrolux Autoliv have developed a three point motorised passive seat belt system, capable of complying with FMVSS 208 criteria. Details of the system are described and a prototype system installation in a Range Rover vehicle is shown.
