Traction control is aimed at achieving improvements in vehicle stability by the control of wheel spin on low or split coefficient of friction surfaces whilst accelerating. The control system discussed in this paper modulates drive torque through a combined throttle and brake actuation strategy. The system is analogous to the operation of anti-lockbrakes during braking. Due to the non-linear and multi-variable aspects of the control system a computer model has been deeloped. This paper discusses the application of the model to development of the control algorithm in the vehicle.
