Material selection engineers rely on supplier documentation to learn the properties of the materials which they select. This documentation comes in various forms; diverse data sheet layouts, proprietary units of measure, proprietary material performance tests and bespoke material classification systems. This paper addresses the problem of selecting thermoset and thermoplastic materials for automotive components. Technical, financial and operational factors impinging on the selection process are discussed. An expert system advisor is proposed, using real time interaction between the inference engine, a costings spreadsheet and a database of materials properties.
