The main features of natural seawater from the open seas in relation to the possible corrosion processes are discussed. Next the possible deviations which may occur in brackish coastal and/or polluted seawater are summarized, as is the use of stored and/or recirculated seawater and synthetic salt solutions. The possible effects of storage and recirculation are demonstrated in a number of experiments in which Al-brass and CuNi10Fe were exposed to seawater of 20 and 40 Cel under different conditions of seawater refreshment.
