With a sharp focus on costs and competition, the vehicle manufacturers have led the world in these use of electronic data interchange for component scheduling, delivery management, administration and engineering designs. Since electronic data interchange first emerged, Lucas has responsed to the requests of vehicle manufacturers and is now linked to more than twenty in the UK, across the rest of Europe and in the United States. It is also linked to over 200 aftermarket distributors in the UK and around the world. The original objectives of electronic data interchange were to remove paperwork, eliminate postal delays and to respond to the organisational changes which customers were making in their operations. As experience has been gained, it has been possible to identify ways of improving customer service. The delivery of products can be more consistent and better information provided to the customer about delivery intentions. Because information can now move almost instantaneously, Lucas Automotive is devising new ways of distributing goods and improving the interaction with vehicle builders' manufacturing plants.
