An investigation into possible ways of reducing the average power consumption of Power Assisted Steering (P.A.S.) pumps. A variable capacity (V.C.) pump, a standard P.A.S. pump with Energy Saving (E.S.) valve and a new design of electric motor driven pump are described. Some comments are included into other potential usages e.g. engine lubrication, automatic transmissions etc.
