The conventional hydraulic power assisted steering gear with its attendant engine driven pump and interconnecting hoses is not generally practical for the small car. The cost, packaging constraints and energy consumption effectively eliminate this type of system. It is clear, therefore, that there is a significant requirement across the industry for a low cost reliable power steering for the small passenger car, a market that has traditionally been the province of manual steering. This type of steering is known generically as Park Assist Steering. The Paper discusses the evolution and requirements for a park assist steering system as applied to small passenger cars. The application of hydraulic and electric power is considered and some potential practical solutions are described in detail. The power and duty cycle requirement for park assist steering are also discussed together with some practical results obtained from a test vehicle.
