The electronically controlled Powrlok II LSD is actuated by an electric motor (E-Motor) which, together with a low-friction expander mechanism, works fully variably against a multi-plate wet clutch. Through sensitive control of torque bias and favourable packaging, suitability for FWD and RWD vehicles is ensured. For 4WD vehicles, the Powrlok II can also be adapted for centre differential or 'hang-on' clutch applications. Appropriate design of the mechanical actuation enables a torque bias to be attained to match extreme split-micro conditions at maximum axle loading for both passenger cars and off-the-road vehicles. The combination of a compact but effective electro-mechanical actuation and a flexible intelligent electronic control offers an economic solution which can readily be matched to the special needs of vehicle manufacturers.
