The imortance of cross country capability for armoured vehicles is universally recognised by both designers and users alike. Actual levels of performance are very difficult to quantify for any particular vehicle and it is even more difficult to make quantative comparisons between totally different mobility conepts, such as tracked vehicles and wheeled vehicles. Advances in tyre design, run flat tyre systems, tyre inflation pressure control, and development of heavy duty independent suspension systems with large wheel travel, have increased the capability of wheeled vehicles in the off highway regime. Heavy wheeled armoured vehicles are now able to compete with tacked vehicles in off-road mobility while maintaining key advantages of low capital cost, low maintenance cost and high speed on-road capability.
