Tyre performance under wet surface conditions will continue to be a major aspect of vehicle dynamic performance (in the limit). The development of systems, i.e. brakes, steering and transmission is towards more automatic control and the effectiveness of such control systems depends to a great extent on the wet grip characteristics of the tyre. The wet cornering ability of a vehicle is one of the most important aspects of performance. The Wet Cornering and Breaking Facility was constructed at MIRA to provide a comprehensive range of surfaces and features to enable this aspect to be studied under controlled conditions. In addition to progressing the development of components and systems which affect the dynamic behaviour of vehicles the facility has been designed to meet the legislative requirements proposed for antilock braking in a turn.
