For truck manufacturers to meet different customers' needs, it is necessary to offer a range of truck specifications and options. This diversity causes complexity in product strucutres, it incurs cost and it makes reductions in both leadtimes and inventory difficult to achieve. Managing compelxity requires means of measuring it and costing its effects. This paper reports how three ratios were developed to measure complexity and describes how they are used. The ratios are computed by analysing the MPR II based Bill of Materials structures. The ratios are shown to provide design, manufacturing, marketing, systems and vehicle engineering with common ground in reviewing the effects of complexity and its costs.
