Within the DOE-sponsored Advanced Turbine Technology Applications Project (ATTAP), Norton/TRW Ceramics is performing development work on two components - the AGT101 stator and rotor. Work during the first-year of the program is reported. A Si3N4 material, designated NT154, was supplied and qualified for use in the program. Taguchi-based experiment designs were developed and initiated for five process operations including: (1) Powder Beneficiation, (2) Forming, (3) Pre-HIP Heat Treatment, (4) HIP, and (5) Post-HIP Component Integrity Treatments. Injection molding and casting were selected as the fabrication processes for the stator and rotor, respectively. Components from these processes are being formed and characterized. As experiments are completed, process parameter settings are being defined and implemented for each operation.
