Residual stresses can be a major factor influencing failure processes in components. These stresses can be introduced into railway rails during manufacture and during service. In combination with the applied stresses, they can give rise to wheelburns, cracks, flaking, shelling, squats and tache ovales which can result in rolling contact fatigue with the possibility of subsequent fracture and risk of derailment. The neutron diffraction method has been applied to determine residual stresses in railway rails. It is shown that sufficient discrimination can be obtained to achieve an accuracy in stress of approximately plus/minus 25 MPa. Experiments made on rail slices of different thickness have shown that a significant three dimensional stress state can be preserved in slices as thin as 12 mm but that thicknesses of about 25 mm are required for the full residual stress distribution to be preserved.
