Until now, many different drive-systems have been developed for electric vehicles. The drive components can be used universally if they work as separate units. The separate mounting of each unit and the necessary and numerous electrical and mechanical connections (electric wires, shaft-connections, cooling devices) are disadvantageous. Different forms of integration between motor, gear and controller are discussed. By using gear-shifting, the drive can be optimised. A good performance for a separately excited dc motor is given by splitting in two parts fed by a dual dc chopper. The design of a motor and controller system for a passenger car is shown.
