This paper traces the design and development of two semi-active suspension concept cars. The control system is modelled mathematically in order to estimate performance and assist the selection of elements of the control system such as the control strategy, discrete time signal processing techniques, actuators, and sensors. The prototype development is discussed and the improvements in ride and handling reviewed. Extensive road measurements were conducted with competitor vehicles which show that three rate switchable semi-active suspension achieves an objectively measured superior level of passenger ride comfort than other cars.
