The VECTRA 4 x 4 is the first 4WD passenger car marketed by Opel. Its driveline concept is characterized by many technical features. The torque distribution is automatically controlled through a viscous clutch, depending on the amount of spin between front and rear wheels, axle load, and the actual friction coefficient. A hydraulic multiplate clutch which disengages the rear axle during each braking manoeuvre assures a good braking stability and permits unlimited ABS compatibility. Testing on single-axis teststands and towing on one axle are also possible. An electronic control unit takes care of 4WD engagement and is also monitoring the system without any driver involvement. In case of any failure the system automatically switches to front wheel drive mode. This 'intelligent 4WD system', a result of careful design and development work, will now be described in more detail.
