A system for recovering energy of braking by means of a hydraulic pump receiving power - from the wheels and discharging into a hydropneumatic accumulator, is described and analyzed. The energy thus stored is utilized to - run a hydraulic motor which assists the engine during periods of power demand. Whenever there is no such demand, the engine is de-clutched and, under certain conditions, turned off. It is restarted by means of the hydraulic motor. Thus, idling is minimized, and engine braking issubstituted by 'pump braking'. Dissipative brakes are still required for emergencies. Under urban driving conditions an estimated 28 % fuel saving appears feasible.
