Hitherto the pressure areas between contacting faces could only be established for complex shaped designs by extensive measurement and calculation procedures. The employment of expensive measuring devices or complicated calculation programme is, in any case, no guarantee of the accuracy of the thereby established pressure areas. In many instances the problem with the known measuring methods lies in the limited to non existant space avaialble to install stress measuring devices. In FEM calcuations the difficulty lies mainly in the inexact information on the material properties and load input pattern. The use of pressure measuring folie often leads to unsatisfactory quantitative results due to the shortcomings of folie in high pressure differences. The time required for an expensive measuring rig, or alternatively, a detailed mesh generation calculation programme, often prohibits an economic mesurement programme. Experimental stress analysis has established a new application area. A workable solution is now possible through the use of optical stress analysis plates together with steel balls of various sizes and numbers. Lucas Automotive Koblenz, are utilizing this new process in the development of optimized braking systems which meet the functional and performance requirements identified.
