This paper outlines the reasons for the growing interest in the underwater environment and the engineering developments associated with the exploitation of the oceans. The case for the Stirling engine is made and particular applications are discussed. The Stirling will be a strong candidate for power generation tasks because of its inherent virtues, especially its avility to work in an 'airless' environment. However, it is pointed out that the Stirling must prove its reliability before it is generally accepted.
