An impact bumper bar was developed for the current model Corvette using the Liquid Composite Molding (LCM) process. The activities leading to the design, analysis, prototyping, and testing will be discussed and results presented. The project activities used to drive the program from conceptual development through production implementation will also be discussed. The Liquid Composite Molding process has many material choices which yield various properties. These properties and the selection rationale used for this bumper application will be presented. Advantages of Liquid Composite Molding will become evident throughout the project's discussion - advantages that can be extended to other applications in the automotive and industrial markets. This is the first production use of structural RIM resins processed by LCM as applied to a truly structural automotive part.
