Predictions of the future civil transport aircraft market already generated an increased competition between airframe manufacturers. In order to remain successful, aircraft efficiency, safety and comfort must be further improved by consequently employing new technologies. The classical field of aerodynamics offers still a large performance potential. These new aerodynamic technologies will be described and their potential as well as their application problems will be discussed using as example the variable chamber control for transonic wings, shock boundary layer interaction control and the natural laminar flow concept. The overall combination of these technologies in strong relation with control techniques, new materials and manufacturing techniques leads to the concept of the intelligent wing.
