The technique of nonlinear least squares has been used to identify suspension parameters in rail vehicles, in both analytical and experimental investigations. Suspension element types which have been successfully identified are: linear springs and dampers, piecewise linear springs and dampers, Coulomb friction, suspension stops, and leaf spring hysteresis elements with a piecewise linear force envelope. Analytical identification has been used as a proving ground for the processing techniques. This term refers to a synthetic problem in which noise is added to measurements of the true system, and the true parameter values are sought, starting at a different set of values. The identification of parameters from experimental data is performed with data measured at the A.A.R. Transportation Test Center, where vertical and lateral suspension measurements of an experimental two-axle vehicle were obtained.
