This paper presents the suggestion that bending vibration of wheelset is basic mechanism for causing the rail corrugation to form and develop. For this purpose, dynamic model of wheelset as spring-mass system is established. Dynamic behavior of wheelset is analysed. Bending vibration of wheelset, which is acted by creep force in running, is studied with asymptotical theory. On one-fifth scale rolling test rig, simulating test is performed. By means of the tests, the effect of factors, such as speed, angle of attack, rail condition, etc., on the bending and torsional vibration of wheelset is researched. The test results are essentially consistent with that of theoretical analyses, and show that the suggestion is reasonable. At the end of this paper, several conclusions and recommendations are given.
