In this article a systematic approach to the theoretical investigation of the fully nonlinear behavior of railway vehicles is outlined. The method can be used to examine rather general dynamical systems containing a control parameter. The method is based on the continuous dependence of the solutions on the control parameter, so that it is possible to follow the solution in phase space, when the parameter is varied. When one path is known, other paths can be found that bifurcate locally from the known path. The concept of bifurcation is described in section 2, and it is illustrated in Figure 1. In this way a set of solutions to the dynamical problem may be obtained, which contains the most important results for the applications. It is a good basis for the evaluation of a given truck design. The system of equations must be solved numerically. Christian Kaas-Petersen implemented the method in the program PATH, which is described in section 4. It uses standard differential equation solvers as subroutines. In section 6 the completeness of the results is discussed and an estimate of the costs of computations presented.
