Earlier studies on the buckling of continuously welded rail (CWR) tracks have concentrated on idealized 'foundation' resistance in the lateral plane and neglected the influence of vehicle loads. Recent field investigations, however, have revealed that the lateral resistance is nonlinear with a 'softening' behavior, and that the effect of vehicles on the track's lateral stability is very significant. This paper analyzes the influence of nonlinear lateral resistance and vehicle loads on track buckling. Using the large-deflection/small-strain theory, the stability problem is formulated in terms of equations for the buckled zone and for the adjoining zone (extending to infinity). A rapidly converging Fourier series technique especially suited to this problem has been developed. This paper concludes that spring softening nonlinear lateral resistance gives much lower buckling strength values than 'peak constant resistance' values used in formulating earlier theories. Further, under vehicle loads, the buckling strength can be substantially reduced.381
