This paper covers the test method and analysis technique developed by Gaydon Technology Limited, in the Gaydon Climatic Wind Tunnel, in conjunction with Austin Rover Limited. It provides a method of quantifying subjectively assessed levels of wind noise in a vehicle interior. All the wind noise measurement techniques used by the Rover Group are described, up to and including the current one which uses the so called Articulation Index. This compares the measured noise signals with a standard spectrum and produces a unique number from which correlation between subjective impression and change in noise level has been established.
