One of the steps in the final assembly of the MD-80 aircraft is to attach the skin panels to the frames by riveting. This requires an average of 21.300 rivets per ship. The current method is entirely manual. This paper reports on a new machine that will partially automate this task. A miniature riveter will be mounted on a balance arm which is mounted on a small cart. The cart can be pulled down the center of the fuselage. The weight of the riveter is held by the balance arm, allowing the operator to position it with only 10 pounds of force.
