We all know that the use of advanced composites is expanding day by day in the aerospace industry. Lightweight, increased stiffness, and better fatigue life are the driving force behind this increased use. Fasteners currently used in composite structures are not meeting all the requirements of the structural designers. Therefore, a need exists to develop fasteners for composites that will eliminate the problems associated with installing metallic fasteners in nonmetallic structures. Material compatibility is a must if we want to avoid problems with corrosion, lightning strikes, and low radar signatures.
