The use of vibration analysis for the detection of gear and bearing faults within complex gearboxes has been proposed for many years. While a number of test programs have demonstrated detection capabilities under limited test conditions, no convincing demonstration of a cost effective detection capability has been achieved to date. The objectives of the study effort discussed in this paper are to provide an assessment of the analysis techniques curently available and to identify those areas of development that need to be pursued in order that a feasible operational detection system may be provided. This paper will discuss the findings regarding the availability of adequate design information and will present the results of testing conducted with seeded faults on a relatively simple helicopter gearbox. Needed research will be described.
