This paper deals with the design, fabrication, and testing of a composite main landing gear retracting beam, the design of which required molding of a thick walled graphite/epoxy hollow beam with walls of unprecedented thickness. As it was desired to mold this piece in a one step process to reduce man-hours and simplify tooling and process requirements using an external steel mold, some unique material and process problems had to be dealt with. The process chosen involved use of a thermal expansion tooling rubber mandrel with integral heaters to pressure the laminates from the inside. Full-scale left and right-hand beams were successfully molded and subsequently, passed non destructive testing.
