Changing market forces will affect the design and implementation of automated manufacturing technology. Flexible automation solutions are identified as a logical tool to meet changing business needs in the manufacturing area. Particular attention is given to the strategic importance of manufacturing technology in sustaining and improving a company's competitive position in the marketplace. Implications for automation concept and design activities are reviewed, and a model of a strategic solution to an automotive assembly application is presented.
