The overall concepts and requirements of wind assistance systems for ship propulsion are described. Successful applications of design methods require an examination of the wind-wave climate, aerodynamics of rigs, hydrodynamics of ship hulls, routing and economics and an optimum blend of these factors for the rational development of a windship technology design technique. These topics are discussed in the present paper in order to give an overall appreciation of the present state of theory and applications.
