The sheet molded compound (SMC) plastic industry has begun to support automotive customers with full product design capability, in addition to the traditional manufacturing, tooling, and processing feasibility to achieve the product requirements. The addition of proudct design by the supplier has made it possible for manufacturing groups and product design groups to work together more closely to assure that the process selected can produce parts within specific goals. Experience has shown that the product manufacutring feasibility is ongoing, and follows the design evaluation of the product. Every engineering change must be evaluated on its own to meet specificiations.
