Roadrunner was launched as an all new product designed specifically for the 7.5 tonne GVW market. The launch centred around a mixture of new and established technology. The original foundation brakes represented established technology, disc brakes at the time of vehicle development being new and unproven. Disc brakes were subsequently developed and fitted to the first facelift of the vehicle combined with an increase in engine power. The paper describes what is fitted to the Roadrunner, why disc brakes were not fitted at Job 1, and the experience gained in developing the disc/drum installation. The paper offers business based and technical guidelines to the process of updating existing products, with the focus taken from the vehicle manufacturer's point of view, not the foundation brake designer's point of view. The paper from Deutsche Perrot Bremse, the suppliers of the foundation brakes, complements this paper by covering the technical aspects of the brake design.
