Many modern trucks now have disc brakes fitted to the front axles in order to take advantage of the smooth, stable performance that these brakes offer. However, in order to extend that stability, we need to fit disc brakes to the rear axles. This leads to a requirement for in-wheel parking for disc brakes or the adoption of transmission park with a new set of problems. Lucas Girling have successfully introduced in-wheel parking on trucks up to 11 tonnes GVW, and in this paper, the caliper design and the parkbrake and adjuster design are outlined.
