A critical factor to ongoing progress in marine development today is the development of compact, lightweight pumps offering high discharge pressure which are capable of operation at great ocean depths, for use in applications such as seabed mining, submarine cable laying and seabed rock studies. In answer to these demands, Sugino Machine Limited and Kawasaki Heavy Industries Limited have jointly developed a small, high-performance axial-plunger type pump which is operable at underwater depth to 6,500 m, thus satisfying the requirements of over 98 % of the world's ocean floor. A number of problems had to be overcome in developing a pump for these purposes. First, owing to its operation at such depth, the pump had to be constracted to withstand extremely great external pressure (max. 66.6 MPa at 6.500 m). Second, it had to be highly resistant to corrosion caused by its underseawater environment. Third, it had to offer adequate protection against intrusion of sand and other potential contaminants.
