From start to steady running, the counterrotating propellers of an underwater vehicle should operate in the condition that the torques of forward and aft propellers are balanced to avoid unfavourable roll motion of the vehicle. A simple design method was developed to provide the counterrotating propellers which keep the torque balance condition in wide range of operation. This method is based on the idea that a torque coefficient curve of a propeller can be approximated by a linear function of advance ratio and that by selecting two independent parameters, diameter and pitch, the torque balance condition can be satisfied in wide range of operation. The towing tank experiments on the counterrotating propellers designed by the authers' method showed the validity of this design method.
