A review of published information relating to the potential benefits which can be obtained by controlled steering of the rear wheels of cars in addition to conventional arrangements is made. The types of control suggested and the claimed advantages are listed. Vehicle experiments and subjective impressions are described and efforts made to work out good control schemes and to understand the experimental findings are recounted. A critical appraisal of these efforts is included and conclusions regarding the state-of-the-art and fruitful directions for continuing research are suggested.
