Two experimental suspension systems are described which make significant improvements to the driver comfort of agricultural tractors. Both of these feature very low rate springs and so depend on some form of active control of ride height or attitude. Field trials with numbers of professional tractor drivers showed that for many operations they were willing to set higher working speeds at the same time as benefiting from a better ride. Suspending the driver's cab is the easiest way to make a big improvement in ride, but does nothing for loads on the tractor's running gear or on attached implements. Suspending the front axle reduces these loads significantly but gives less of a ride improvement. Suspending the rear wheels of a conventional farm tractor still presents considerable problems.
