On the basis of the construction principles for varying the damping forces, the capabilities of two of the most used systems will be compared: Firstly the mere influence of the piston valves and secondly the variations possible with externally fitted actuators which for example with twin tube dampers are capable of including the influence of the bottom valve function. Furthermore, hydro-pneumatic levelling units will be considered in the study, too. The damping control potential of both systems was compared, using two examples similar to those in current use for test purposes. The performance of the new technology was tested using a test vehicle (BMW 635 CSI) fitted with BOGE fast switching shock absorbers, hydro-pneumatic struts, dynamic drive sensors and a sophisticated electronic system. A statistical analysis of the switching behaviour of the control valves and of body acceleration substantiated the considerable increase in ride comfort and driving safety.
