This paper provides a summary of the data and findings from a ten-month evaluation of the Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) II Industry Prototype installed on a Piedmont Airlines' Boeing 727 aircraft. The data presented represents quantitative and qualitative information on the performance of TCAS II in the National Airspace System (NAS) and identifies the impacts of TCAS on Air Traffic Control and the flight crew. The information provided concentrates on the characteristics of the TCAS encounters and the operational use of the system.
